American working in Asia for over ten years

Hello!

My name is Tyler, and I'm an American who has lived and worked abroad for ten years. Three of those years were based in Shenzhen and HK, where I started working with college applications. My Chinese friend and I ran a small service for students in Shenzhen and Xi'an, but she is now stopping work as she wishes to have children, so I'm looking for another role.

I have been helping students with all aspects of the application process –– ideating activities/actions, developing Personal Statements, overseeing and coaching all the required essays, and preparing for interviews. I routinely have students getting into Cornell, Penn, JHU, Duke, WFU, Emory, NYU, Vanderbilt, USC, UCLA, Rice, CMU, etc. For the last seven application seasons, I have enjoyed working with young people as I like to help them develop their ideas and help them to take more meaningful actions.

I am a specialist with design, art, and film students who have extra content to develop for applications but work with all types of students. I have also worked with engineering students to devise and document their projects for sharing. My background is programming new media to create interactive social projects, so I am comfortable dealing with STEM students and humanities/poly-sci students. With my experience living in Asia during high school in a homestay, I have greatly appreciated Chinese Taoist Philosophy and Chinese writing styles along with traditional arts. Meanwhile, while living in SZ and HK, I have my finger on the pulse of modern China and know about the current landscape and social/political issues.

As a long-term mentor and coach, I am with the students step by step, engaging with students in WhatsApp/WeChat calls and messages as we work on shared Google Docs together. Before the application session, I provide writing tutoring, brainstorming, and practice essay sessions to get things going and check to see if the student has enough actions and stories to get into their school of choice. Sometimes students need more boosting, and I will work with them to ideate some action that might make them stand out or appear unique. On the other hand, I have also worked as a ghost editor/writer as well, helping students who need urgent help or development of some essay that they need and cannot develop a decent draft idea on their own. 

Finally, I am also experienced in having sales or "getting to know you" sessions to make the clients feel comfortable and happy about their experience in signing up for the services. ➻ Programmer, application developer, and event planner for interactive and public art events.

➻ Group funded by a 500,000 USD grant from the University and the State. 

➻ Was in charge of networking, planning, and documenting actions with community groups for events in Minneapolis and later across the USA and the world.

➻Founding member of a bike-based graffiti projection group.

➻Planned over 100 public projections utilizing interactive media and video. 

➻ This project's goal was to bring art into our lives beyond galleries, reclaim public space and empower new people to use creative tools.
